Starting School
Starting school is an exciting and important stage in your child's development.
The early years of schooling form a firm foundation for future learning.
They should be happy times, full of challenging experiences,
realistic expectations and success.
We want your child's time at Buttsbury to be a happy one,
and we will do our utmost to ensure that this very important step is taken with enthusiasm and confidence.
Please find below information regarding the School Readiness Meeting.
Speech, Language and Communication Skills
It's really important that children learn to talk and listen so they can communicate with people around them,
learn, make friends and have fun.
By the time your child reaches four their sentences should sound more adult like.
However there will still be a few mistakes in grammar or speech sounds, e.g. "I falled over"
Should your child, before they start school, be saying for example, "Look at the tat" instead of "cat"
you can help by modelling back and encouraging your child to use the correct language, e.g. you can say "Yes...it is a cat."
Avoid breaking up the word e.g. "Yes it is a c - a - t", as it sounds unnatural.
More Useful tips for talking
Have fun with books, songs and nursery rhymes.
When asking questions wait for a response and do not follow with lots of other questions
Switch off the TV when no one is watching it, to limit the background noise.
If you have any concerns about your child's communication skills while they are still at pre-school,
you can meet a speech and language therapist at your local children's centre.
